Career

Arunthathy's career begins with her entry into the broadcasting field in the early 70's. Following her first position she engaged herself totally and enthusiastically in the fields of music and broadcasting with commitment. As an achiever she kept reaching out to higher levels of performance and it did not take long for the knowledgeable to spot her talent and engage her in various productions. With her rich experience gained over the years, Arunthathy was invited to many positions that brought her the name and fame that she deserved. The high points of her career development follows:

Positions held

  • Participated as judge at the Asia Challenge Song Competition in Singapore - Organised by Media corp singapore in March 2012.
  • Member of the selection Broad for the Annual "Bunka Award" by the Japanese Embassy.
  • Member of the International Jury at the "Voice of Asia" contest in Kazhakstan and "Asia Music Festival" in Shanghai-China.
  • Lecturer in Carnatic Music at the Indian Cultural Centre, since 1998.
  • Lecturer in Carnatic Musi, University of Visual and Performing Arts, since 2000.
  • Consultant- Shakthi TV Programmes.
  • Executive Producer & Director of Aru Sri Theatre-Production Company.
  • Consultant for Music Cooperation Project between Norway and Sri Lanka.
  • Member of the National Consultative Council for Dance of the Arts Council, Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
  • Member of the Curriculum development committee for Degree Courses at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies at the University of Keleniya and the University of Visual and Performing Arts and visiting lecturer at both Universities (Since 2000).
  • Advisor to the Curriculum development for Degree Courses in Carnatic Music at the Faculty of Sripali of the University of Colombo - 2001.
  • Served as an advisor in formulating curriculum on Music and Dancing at the Sripadha Vidyalaya in Hatton - 2001.
  • Member of the Presidential Task Force for Free Media. 2003 - 2008.

Producer / Advisor

  • Artistic Director & Producer for "Mekala" - Performance held on 30th & 31st October 2013 Bishops College Auditorium.
  • On popular request, "Mekala" was performed on 19th November 2013 at the Presidents anniversary celebration of Presidentship.
  • Artistic Director for Kalidasas Sakunthala Dance Drama- September 2009. First ever dance-drama produced in Sinhala with music composed in Carnatic and Hindustani Styles-by Arunthathy Sri Ranganathan. Sponsored by ICCR.
  • "Shakunthala Dance Drama" performed in Jaffna on 05.05.2010 in Tamil Language, Sponsored by India Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Lyrics and music composition by Arunthathy Sri Ranganathan.
  • Repeat performance of "Sakunthala" Dance Drama in Colombo on 11th June 2010.
  • OSLO Mela-Norway. August 2010 producer of ETHNIC Drumming and Dancing.
  • Consultant for Shakthi TV Dance Festival October 2009.
  • Artistic Director for the Dance performance held at the opening of the Opera House in Oslo, Norway 27th April 2008.
  • Artistic Director for Sri Lankan Dance Troup performance at the International Ramayana Festival in Mathya pradish India in June 2008.
  • Artistic Director for "Friends in Harmony"-Multicultural concert in Hambantota, November 2007 – Norwegian Funded Project.

  • Producer of "AFRO EURASIA" Multicultural Festival with the participation of Norway, Kenya and Sri Lanka artistes, October 2002.
  • Pioneer Producer of the Largest National Carnatic Music Orchestra bringing more than 100 musicians together from around the Island for the Arts Council Festival in 1999.
  • Produced and composed Music for a Mega Dance Drama "Janma Bhoomi" depicting the path to independence, held at the 50th independence day celebrations of Sri Lanka, in which more than 300 dancers participated – 4th February 1998.
  • Performed concerts and conducted workshops and lecture demonstrations in Malaysia at the invitation of the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia. November 1998.
  • Vocal & Veena concerts and also performed at a Bharathanatya Arangetram in Sydney & Melbourne – Australia, April 1995, August 2003.
  • Producer of many 'Savasangeetha' shows presented by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting corporation, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation & Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
  • Advisor –"Listen to their Voices" Tsunami project by UNICEF & FCE.
  • Art Director for "International Volunteers Day" and "World Religion Day".
  • Released many Audio cassettes and Compact Discs (CDs) to her credit.
  • Produced repeat performances of Ramayana, more than fifteen occasions for the Ministry of Tourism in, India and Sri Lanka.
  • Composed music for more than 50 Dance Dramas.
  • Composed lyrics and music for more than 300 Dance performances.

Performer

  • Fifty Veena Ensemble - The first ever performance with 50 Veenas - A Guru - Shishya pefortmance.
  • Performed as the lead singer at a Dance Programme in Canada on 03.07.2010.
  • Member of the International Jury at the "Azia Dauzy / Voice of Asia" contest held in Kazakhstan - 1999, 2000
  • Participated at the 4th Shanghai Asia Music Festival in Shanghai. November 2001.
  • Performed at a Classical Vocal Concert in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. January 2000.
  • Performed at prestigious music festivals in Thiruvaiaru - South India, January 1993 and Indian Fine Arts Society, Music Festival - Chennai, December 1993.
  • International Ramayana Festival - North India (2007).
  • Performed at the music festival in South Africa 1991 & 1992.
  • Sang in a Sinhala film "Yahaloowo" - (2007) produced by the legendary producer Sir Lester James Peiris.
  • Participated as the Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Cultural Team at the Shanghai Asian Music Festival in Shanghai - China. November 1999 & 2000.
  • Participated at the 3rd Asian Performance Seminar & International Symposium Programme in Tokyo, Japan (17th to 19th November 1997).
  • Participated and performed at the 5th World Saiva Conference in Durban - South Africa September 1996.
  • Participated at the Copy Rights Seminar and at the International Federation of musicians. Seminar in Tokyo - Japan, November 1995.
  • Participated at the 24th International Congress on Arts and Communication in Oxford University UK and presented paper on "The History of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation".

  • Performed as Lead Singer at Bharathanatyam Dance performances numbering more then 1000 concerts over four decades.

Cultural Ambassador

  • As cultural ambassador of Sri Lanka Arunthathy has traveled to many parts of the world including countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, India ,UK, Paris, Germany, Norway, Amsterdam, China, Japan, Kazakastan, USA, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa and Canada to promote Sri Lankan music and culture.
  • As a media personnel promoted music and culture through institutions and performances for more than 50 years.
  • Honored as distinguished Cultural Ambassador to the City of Toronto by :

  • Invited as the Chief Guest at the Launch of the 1st DVD on Bharathanatyam in Toronto – Canada. Music Compositions were done by Mrs. Arunthathy SriRanganathan, January 2008.
  • Participated at the Astana – International Music Festival in Kazhakastan, August 2007.
  • Participated at the Forde International Folk Music Festival in Norway in July 2002 & 2003.
  • Represented Sri Lanka at the World Music Festival in Lahore, Pakistan. Performed at many concerts with Pandit Amaradeva, March 2000.
  • Pioneered the introduction of Sri Lankan talent at the Shanghai Asian music festival in China and the 'Voice of Asia' festival in Kazhakastan, since 2000 - annually.
  • Invited by NORAD, to Norway, to attend the Global Music seminar. Presented a paper on Local Community Global Area – Peace through Music, May 1999.
  • Represented Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation at the 8th International Tamil Conference in Tanjore - South India, January 1995.
  • First Tamil Sri Lankan artiste nominated by the Government on the recommendation of the Ministry of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs) to attend and perform at prestigious music festivals in Thiruvaiaru - South India, January 1993.
  • Indian Fine Arts Society, Music Festival - Chennai, December 1993.
  • First Sri Lankan artist who brought Sri Lankan map in to African countries by performing in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and south Africa.
  • Represented Sri Lanka at the 6th Tamil conference in Malaysia - 1987.
